Background
To the average man on the street, Henry Stern is the presenter of several
popular BBC documentaries. His first work, "Two Hands of China", about
the treatment of Chinese dissidents won him critical acclaim, although
many in the industry wondered if he was just a flash in the pan. These
cynics were disproved by his next documentary, "Cold Feet", which
concerned the post Cold-War economic crisis in Russia. (A stark portrayal
of the Russian Mafia and corruption within the Kremlin)
Stern turned his eyes to America, in particular the survivalist movement,
for his third film. Oddly enough it was abandoned shortly afterards,
Stern claiming that there was not enough material for him to do justice
to a documentary, instead he announced he would be developping a series
of historical pieces.
To the critics eyes there is no doubting that Stern's standards have
dropped somewhat since then. Stern claims his shows are vehicles for
human rights. "I highlight the dark spots of the world, shining the
bright torch of truth upon the corrupt and fallen" but many critics have
berate him nonetheless. The format of many of Stern's current works is
the same, the Civilised White People are shown as paragons of virtue,
whilst the Ignorant Natives would fall to barbarism, cannabalism and
civil war the moment the White Men left. Much of his historical research
is very selective and only really presents one side of the story. Others
commentators argue that these critics did were the same ones who wrote
him off as a one-hit wonder at the start of his career and have a vested
interest in denouncing his work.
The truth of the matter is that far more insiduous. Rather than being a
serious journalist who went down-market to sell his stories to a more
populist audience, Stern found something a little darker in the American
Mountains than just simple bigotry. He stumbled across a Karotechia-
backed cult devoted to Azathoth. Whilst trying to escape with valuable
camera footage he fell into a bear-pit and was captured. Stern was
subjected to several days of psychological torture (including repeated
castings of Dread Curse of Azathoth) before the leader of the cult,
Jurgen Dieters, a seventy year old nazi, used a Mind Transfer spell to
swap bodies with him.
Having transferred minds with him, Jurgen and his cronies pumped him
full of C10904 (See below), stripped him and dumped him in town,
safe in the knowledge that if he did talk he would be taken for a junkie
coming down from a bad trip and consigned to a mental institute or drug-
rehabilitation unit for the rest of his, now considerably shortened,
life.
"Stern" originally had brown hair, but this has been dyed blond since his
"change" His eyes are crystal blue. Shortly after his ordeal he took a
six-month sabbatical, claiming that he needed a rest, but secretly
researching all that he could about Stern to play the part as required.
Jurgen Dieters
Jurgen was a mid-level nazi officer who main job during the war was
filing paperwork and translating captured British documents. His
administrative skills saw much usage during the final months of the war
and the first few months of peace, when he organised much of the Nazi
exodus to South America. Dieters has nothing but contempt for anybody
who is less intelligent than himself, though he will tolerate fools if
they serve his purposes. Occasionally his quick-temper gives him away and
has earnt him a reputation for being difficult to work with in the world
of show-business.
Jurgen has a sadistic streak. He prefers torture to death and like to see
former enemies driven insane rather than killed. He is particularly fond
of subjecting them to C10904.
The original Jurgen is now in a mental institute in Alabama. He has blue
eyes and white (once blonde) hair. He has a hacking cough from a case of
laryngitis which he never quite recovered from and he seems to be unable
to focus upon the real world for more than a few minutes at a time.
GM Use
As a bishoffe and a cultist devoted to Azathoth, Stern is an obvious
threat. However taking out Stern may be very difficult. As a media
figure any suspicious disappearance will draw unwanted attention,
although this could be written as revenge by the Chinese or the Russian
mafia, if the killers are clever enough.
A Stern-backed documentary in "a secret conspiracy within the American
goevrnment" might prove a serious handicap to Delta Green, although in
these circumstances may see DG and MJ-12 may work together to rid
themselves of a common enemy.
Stern's media contacts can be used in other ways, perhaps to distort the
truth and portray DG agents as threats rather than saviours. For
instance, if the Karotechia learn that Delta Green has destroyed a South
African branch of the 777, Stern might let drop a few hints to some of
his journalistic friends about American involvement in the butchery of
"innocent" South Africans.
C10904
C10904 is a drug developped by Karotechia experiments on Jews during the
War. Nicknamed "Daoloth's Brew" the drug is a mixture of Mythos magic
and chemistry. The drug has a potency of 15 which is checked against the
users CON. Should the user succumb his the sensory elements of the brain
are scrambled, causing the user to belive he is hearing through his eyes,
seeing through his ears, tasting through touch and feeling through his
sense of smell and taste. Understandably this completely disorientates
the user and renders them almost completely useless in the real world.
The SAN loss for a C10904 trip is d8/2d10. A trip lasts for two hours,
however at the end of the trip the user must make a POT vs. POW test. If
this result is failed the user becomes prone to flashbacks under
stressful situations. Some users of C10904 claim to have seen "The true
nature of the Universe" under the efects of this drug but this has been
discounted as the mad babblings of lunatics.
C10904 shows up in police drug tests as an LSD variant.
