FN-HERSTAL P-90
This is another personal defence weapon, perhaps the original. Designed and
built on the premise that most troops do not need or want a full-powered and
full-sized assault rifle to defend themselves with, and that a pistol is often a
poor defensive weapon of last resort.
The weapon was required to be small and light, easily manouverable in the small
spaces it might be carried in (inside airplanes or ommand centres for example=),
with the power to defeat body armour , but low recoil energy.
A tall order, but one which FN met. The P-90 fires a specially designed 5.7mm
round which is more like a light rifle round. I can penetrate a NATO nylon
helmet at 150 metres, and an armoured flak jacket at 100, but the recoil energy
is approximately 2/3 of an equivalent full-power (ie. SMG) 9mm Parabellum
round.
