Actually, the Irish Republican Army allied itself with Germany during World War II at least, and possibly World War I. The Eagle Has Landed, anyone?

Correct on both world wars, and before that there was the French connection during the Napoleonic Wars.
I think this was due to the ancient Irish dictums of:
* Kick the British when they have their attention drawn elsewhere * Anyone fighting the British can't be bad * The enemy of my enemy is my friend * Begging for arms and munitions is a long and honourable tradition

Subject: DG: WWI/Irish Revolution

There was a revolution against British rule in Dublin during the First World War. The Post Office in O'Connell St. (I think) is still a site of national importance. You can see still the bullet holes in one of the statues at the start of the street.
