Adept Encounters

for the Emerald Hammer campaign

This section details some of The Fate's attempts to use their Adepts to scupper DG operations during the Emerald Hammer campaign. These encounters are all optional and should be used at an appropriate juncture.

When to use Adepts

These encounters should be used when they are most dramatic or if the party is having an easy time of things. As with many Adepts they have little or no knowledge of the larger picture and are non-sequiturs to the true adventure. Adept encounters needn't be horrific but they should be bizarre, leaving the PC's wondering what happened and why.

Jason Hodges

"Huxley was right. Ford are taking over the world. Advertising their shiny new cars with their shiny new lifestyles. Telling us this years sleek new improvements, how much more fashionable the new cars are, how fast their new cars are, how safe their new cars are... Don't believe the hype - the automobile is still the biggest death-trap known to man and Ford are still sat on top of a pile of corpses, like worshippers of Kali..."

Jason used to love cars. He used to like riding them fast, riding them hard, feeling the raw power rattle through his bones. Ultimately he felt the raw power of a Ford Capri rush though his left leg. The driver didn't even stop and all Jason saw of him was a tall black man with a manic grin on his face.

Since his accident Jason has taken his wrath out on Ford whenever possible. He's sent letters to their complaints office, he's turned up at their shareholders meeting and spread poisonous rumours about a BMW takeover, he vandalized their new model at a press conference and gleefully takes every opportunity to destroy their credibility.

Jason's latest campaign is to ruin Ford from the ground up. Scratching paintwork with a key, smashing windscreen's, drilling holes in exhaust pipes and slashing car tyres. Needless to say, all action is directed solely against Ford motor cars.

At a suitable point when the PC's require their car, their paths cross with Jason, who has poured sugar into their petrol tank. The car will not start. It takes a Mechanical Repair roll to diagnose the problem and a garage to fix it.

Jason is fairly easy to catch. Several witnesses saw him committing the act and can point the PC's towards the alley where Jason headed. As Jason has a permanent limp from the accident the PC's will quickly catch him up. Jason knows nothing of the Mythos, the Karotechia or eldritch tomes but is more than willing to espouse the great epistle of Ford. If turned over to the police Jason will serve a one-year sentence. Law rolls (or Credit Rating rolls for law-enforcement PC's) will allow PC to view his previous records - charges of vandalism, breaches of the peace and corporate sabotage against Ford litter his record.

PC's contemplating more violent action should be wary. Jason is unarmed and, whilst a nuisance, the authorities will come down heavily on PC's taking the law into their own hands. Depending on the action this may lead to charges of GBH or worse. At the very least news will reach the PC's superiors who will want a full enquiry into the affair.

Ralph Peters

"I've seen it. I know it works. This could be the biggest technological revolution for mankind since the wheel. Free power. Just imagine it. No more grimy power stations polluting the world. No more need to rape the earth for oil and coal. No more greenhouse gasses burning us up... Free power for everyone."

Ralph Peters has a dream. A dream of free power for everyone. He has seen how he can make a device which will provide for everyone's every need. He knows it will work - he's worked on the calculations for fifteen years now, ever since that stranger at the amateur science conference showed him a different layout for his circuits. Ralph knows his device will bring about world peace. He has supreme confidence in his abilities. He's checked and double-checked the schematics more than one-hundred times. There's no way his Power Charge Capacitor can fail. It was such a simple discovery. Einstein was wrong, Newton was a sham, Hawking isn't even in the same ball park. Energy can be created! All he needs to do is connect his device to the power generator in the basement and the feedback loop will do the rest.

It should come as little surprise to the Keeper that Ralph's altruistic plan is doomed to an explosive failure. Unfortunately in doing so Ralph's machinations cause a power cut which knocks out the main city for twelve hours and the suburbs for another twenty-four. This is scheduled to occur a time of highest inconvenience to the PC's.

Later investigations by the local electricity company trace the source of the blackout to an explosion at the bottom of a block of run-down flats. Most of the residents were out at the time, but three were severely injured and one was at ground zero when the explosion occurred. His name was Ralph Peters. Amongst the ruins a small singed notepad contains pages and pages of calculations, along with a circuit design. The circuitry is incomplete and requires an Electronics roll to read. A Cthulhu Mythos roll identifies part of the wiring in the circuit as a corrupted version of the Elder Sign.

Miles Trabeau


"The youth of today is ignoring family values. We should start a campaign of compulsory sterilization for all unmarried mothers and we should start this campaign now, IN EUROPE."

Miles Trabeau is the owner of a small chain of cheap superstores in the South-West of England, although the Keeper should relocate these as he sees fit. Miles is a self-made man who opinions are always correct. He cannot understand why his fellow men have voted those neo-socialists into power and believes that they must have fallen victim to political propaganda. However Miles is benevolent. He understands that not everyone can have his superior willpower, so he has mounted his own campaign to bring the voice of reason to the people.

Miles campaign takes the form of hiring out advertisements in the local press every week. Approximately one-quarter of these adverts describe the bargains to be had within his stores, the remainder of them are devoted to his editorials including his favourite topics, "EURO-crazy means bureaucracy" and "Westminster is not a part of France" A few well-paid bribes to the ASA and some funny handshakes with the editors of the local newspapers prevent his adverts from being shut down.

It would probably be a simple matter to get a court injunction brought against Miles, provided that the matter was brought to the right authorities. Whilst this would put an end to Miles racist diatribe, his masonic friends and some good lawyers would prevent him going to jail at the cost of a small fine. Miles continues his activities by sending mail to The Times but few of his letters ever get published.

Those enquiring into Miles past discover the root cause of his xenophobia During the early nineties he lost a small industrial lawsuit following an injury to one of his warehouse employees, Pearl O'Hattyn. New regulations from the EEC for workers rights led to a record-breaking compensation claim which cost Miles dearly in both monetary value and status - his application to join the local golf club was rejected.

Whilst Miles views are Fascist he has no connections to the Karotechia. Nevertheless PC's scanning newspapers for clues are likely to come across his handiwork. Miles should be used by the Keeper as a trap for players who believe that every piece of racism is connected to the Karotechia. He may cause a well-ordered cell to waste valuable time when they should be concentrating their efforts elsewhere.
