And as for entymology (or is that the one about the insects??):
I tried, but there's no chance for it in german, but probably the Karotechia
was first named "Okkulte Abteilung der SS", and then, after the invasion of
Poland and then renamed to "Karotechia", after their first success there...
Janusz, any chance deriving this word from your language?

Florian, have you got a source for, or a reason why, the Karotechia was
first called the 'Okkulte Abteilung der SS'?

Well, since Glancy doesn't give an explanation for the word "Karotechia", I
tried to find the etymology of it in german with no success. So I thought that
maybe they were renamed after an early success, which isn't documented in the
DG book. Maybe the word can be derived from one of the early occupied countries
language(s) or maybe "jiddish"(sp?) or even hebrew? Any etymologists out
there??
The reason I called them "Okkulte Abteilung der SS" (Occult Department of
the SS) was: "...led [...] to the creation of an SS department [...] devoted to
researching the occult...". Another reason was that normally, nazis gave their
'creations' very formal names, most of the time revealing what their purpose
was. But it's o.k. to rename them afterwards, I'd rather fight something called
"Karotechia" than "Die Okkulte Abteilung der SS".

According to my German manual, "Karo" means square or diamond. I'm not sure
what "techia" would mean, though. Maybe this is in reference to the
chess-board structure, with Bauer, Ritter, and Bischofes? "Square
Organization" or somesuch?
