I've cribbed together some notes on the Chapter, which is coming together a whole lot quicker than I might have thought. So...here goes!!

Let's begin with the backstory.

In December 1996, members of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) seized control of the residense of the Japanese Ambassador to Peru during a diplomatic reception. The seige lasted until April 1997, when the Peruvian military rescued all but one hostage, and allegedly killed the MRTA members involved.

This is the story that hit the news. In fact, as so often happens in the world of DG, things were much, much more complicated.

What happened was this. Yukio Mirigami, a linguist from Japan was invited to Peru in order to help in the translation of the Wormius translation of the Necronomicon. The Wormius was being held at the Ambassador's residence, on loan from the University of Lima, where it had resided since its discovery 5 years ago in an Andes Mountain cave. The U of Lima had been in contact with the American Library of Congress regarding the document (Steered there by DG assets in-country) regarding possible translation services, and Joseph Camp recommended Miss Mirigami, a DG friendly, for the task.

Unbeknownst to them, others also knew of the recovery. Jaime Cabrazo, a high-ranking member of the Senderio Luminoso (AKA the Shining Path) learned of the discovery and via his academic contacts and expertise, also realized the potential value of the Wormius. He covertly contacted the MRTA and arranged the seige, conning the MRTA into believing that this would make an effective political statement against the Fujimori Administration. Little did they know what would happen.

Once the siege began, Cabrazo had planned for a Shining Path mole inside the MRTA to smuggle the Wormius out of the residence to him. DG also made moves, placing a cell on the scene, as "Observers" because it was believed that US citizens were also in the Residence. this may or may not have been true, but it was good enough for DG. As the siege lengthened, both DG and the Peruvian military got antsy, and the MRTA's demands became increasingly more difficult to fulfill. Finally, President Fujimori authorized an assault on the residence, and the DG cell went in, too. They managed to safely rescue Miss Mirigami, but did not find the Wormius. Cabrazo, on the other hand, got the Wormius and began to study it.The MRTA contingent was wiped out, almost to the man, and is now at less than 100 members.

This is the back story so far. I'll send, via another post, what ideas I have for the adventure in "present day". As always, I welcome your comments, suggestions, and scathing criticisms!

Okay...here are more ideas for the Peruvian leg of Emerald Hammer.

The Karotechia has been working in Peru through their local contact, Antonio Trabajos. Trabajos is one of the survivors of the Residence Siege, who has since risen to the highest rank within the MRTA. Trabajos is being fed information by Michael Wilhelm, a German expatriot living in Lima, with connections back to the Karotechia (and he, in fact, may well be my Bischofe). Trabajos is bitter about the whole Siege, and has learned through Wilhelm, that he was sold out by Cabazos and the Shining Path. He wants payback....bad. (revenge-fu, Nazi Expatriat-fu)

Cabazos, meanwhile, is keeping his possession of the Wormius very secret, but, unknown to him, at least three groups know of this: DG, the Karotechia (via Wilhelm), and Stephen Alzis (because he knows just about everything!). There's also the possibility that the Russian Version of DG knows also, since the Shining Path is quite the Communist Organization (In fact, it's other name is the Partido Comunidad del Peru, or PCP for short), and had been getting some small backing from the Party in Russia. Now, Cabazos began reading the Wormius purely as an academic exersize, but now the tome has him, lock, stock, and barrel. (Evil Tome-fu, Communista-fu)

It also doesn't help matters that Cabazos' base camp is very close indeed to the Nazca Lines. It so happens that there is a spell contained in the Wormius that, generally, would open small portals, like doors and such. Cabazos thinks this a handy thing to know, especially when he might need it to help his group's campaign against the Fujimori Administration. What he does not know is that this spell is intended to open larger portals. Much larger. Such portals are often defined by specific inscriptions and markings, and many of those appear in the Nazca Lines. (Who'da thunk it?-fu, Spell-fu, Portals to Other Places-fu)

Cabazos tried this spell once, outside his base camp, and accidentally activated the Lines. The portal opened, and swallowed up a Peruvian Air Force F-15. The plane has been missing for two weeks now and the Peruvian Government is getting antsy. (Missing Military Plane-fu, Alberto Fujimori Cameo-fu)

Into this mix comes DG. But now Cabazos knows that he may well have something far more powerful than he ever imagined. Wilhelm knows that Cabazos has the Wormius and wants it badly. Trabajos wants Cabazos dead..or worse. And over all this Alzis just laughs. (Where the heck is my plot cohesion?-fu)

Okay..it's kind of disjointed thus far, but with luck, I'll be able to put the loose ends together. Again, comments, questions, and slinging of rotten fruit are welcomed!

And while I'm thinking of it, I have more than a few other things I can work in to the chapter. being the next to last Chapter, how it plays out is going to be highly dependent on what happens in other chapters. But...some other ideas I have had.

Okay...I'm resisting the temtation to turn this into "DG: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", but by the time my chapter rolls around, I'm likely to have at least four different groups bearing in on South America. So...how am I proceeding so far?

Kee-areful, there. Sendero Luminoso is a Maoist organization. IIRC during the early 80's, many western countries had human-rights violations arms embargoes on Peru, and the Russians were the ones that supplied them with military hardware to fight the SL. As a result, Peru's armed forces were/are(?) mainly armed with the AK. This is all based on my hazy recollections of news items of the period, but I'll be happy to try and track this down when I get back from vacation Jan. 6th. Otherwise, this chapter looks rockin'.
