Part One: Scorched Earth (Dresden)
Team A travel to Dresden, where they meet with the BKA officer who will
act as their LiBretto liaison. He has also been responsible for
intelligence operations conducted against the DVU, Aryan Bruders and the
hard right in general in old East Germany for the last three years. His
name is Mathius Kahn, and any CIA or foreign intelligence operatives who
have worked in Europe pre-unification will recognise him as formerly of
the Ministerium fuer Staatssicherhert - the dreaded 'Stasi' of East
Germany. Kahn had a considerable reputation as a cunning and ruthless
counter-intelligence officer during the Cold war, and was personally
responsible for the deaths of a number of British and American agents.
He is, however, no communist; and has taken to life in capitalist
society quite comfortably. Kahn is a true parasite - detaching from his
host as it grows weaker, and seeking out the stronger, healthier
organism.
All Delta Green know is that Galt is obviously in town to procure
another occult tome. They don't know which one, however. The only lead
that the BKA can give them is that Aryan Bruders' activity has
suspiciously died down recently - except for a viscous attack on a
Turkish drug dealer downtown called Oliver Hassan. The assault seems
conspicuously heavy-handed - the Turk was beaten badly but is still
alive and in hospital - it seems fellow gang-members interrupted the
beating and a street-fight ensued, which the Bruders came off worst in.
Logically, Team A should mosey on down to the hospital and practise
their intimidation skills on the heavily bandaged Hassan. The Turk is a
tough nut to crack, but will respond to life-threatening threats
eventually - especially if the team let on they are from American
intelligence (Hassan believes the CIA is capable of anything). Hassan
will tell the team that the Infernal Atlas, and several other rare and
nasty sounding books were given to the Apache by an ageing junkie they
know only as Heinrich, in return for a modest amount of skag. He doesn't
know where to find him, as Heinrich contacts them when he needs a fix -
not the other way around. He will also let on that he told all this to
the Bruders who attacked him.
The agents have a number of investigative routes open to them;-
Strong arm other local skag dealers:
If the agents bother to ask Hassan, he will say he's fairly sure
Heinrich didn't just deal with them for his junk. He just didn't do it
often enough. Kahn can put them on the trail of assorted local low life;
none of which will talk to the agents unless they're intimidated or
bribed. If the agents are squeamish about either option, Kahn will
probably step in and cut off a few fingers, ears etc. to get the
information. This, incidentally, is the route the Aryan Bruder's are
taking, and so there is a strong chance that they'll bump into them
during this time. They might also find a few freshly dead dealers about
the place. The Bischoffe, however, will hang back from any skirmish at
this point - he doesn't want to make his presence known unless he has
to. Bear in mind also that the heroin trade in old - East Germany is
largely under the control of well-armed and dangerous divisions of the
Russian Mafia (with lots of ex-Stasi, ex-KGB providing the brains behind
the brawn) and less well-organised, but usually more violent Turkish
street gangs. The agents should be careful about who they strong arm and
where. Sooner or later though, the agents will come across someone whose
delivered to Heinrich's home, and can supply them with an address. The
Bruder's have a head start on the agents here, so they're likely to find
Heinrich before them.
Namedrop on the local 'occult - scene':
Every city has a few bars/clubs where the local witches, sorcerers and
assorted hangers on go to socialise and impress each other- for the most
part they're just flotsam and jetsam with no real talent or knowledge;
just an inkling of what really might be and not enough sense to lock it
away behind a very strong door. Kahn won't be much help here, but any DG
agents who've served in Germany might be aware of a few places. A few
friendly inquiries at a few bars will eventually produce the name
Heinrich Hassler, and Kahn can run a check on the name to bring up an
address.
Follow the Nazis:
Let the Bruders do the legwork. Kahn will be able to pick up their trail
easily enough, by again, strong arming a few low-level Bruders (if the
agents don't kill the 'informant' however, or otherwise incapacitate
them, they'll alert Klieber who'll call in a hit on the group. He won't
use the Bruders for this, but will go directly to the Russian Mafia.
They'll be attacked whilst watching the Bruders). The agents will watch
the Bruders take apart a few heroin dealers, until they get an address
for Heinrich. They'll converge on his place, at which point the
Bischoffe will turn up (seemingly out of no where).
Whatever happens, the agents should be arriving at Heinrich's apartment
building around the same time as the Bischoffe and his Bauer. Either
they'll arrive just before - in which case they'll have to try and
persuade Heinrich to tell them where the book is extremely quickly (not
an easy task - he'll start to throw spells around if he feels
threatened, and he's got no reason to trust the agents), or they'll
arrive just after - and the Bischoffe and Heinrich have joined in
magickal combat. There should be adequate Bauer to keep the agents at
bay whilst the Bischoffe overcomes Heinrich and consumes his memories.
The Bischoffe and his Bauer immediately move on -maybe leaving a
rearguard to keep the agents off their backs.
Pursuing the Nazis:
If the agents chase the Nazi's, they'll simply stop and attack them
again whilst the Bischoffe slopes off. He'll commandeer some more Bauer
from Klieber. If, however, they can get it together and get another car,
they might be able to shadow them to the graveyard and the book. Kahn
will try to arrange police back-up, but won't be able to muster any
substantial re-enforcement's - there's some kind of emergency elsewhere
in the city that's sucking in the local cops.
Heinrich's flat:
Failing that, there will be adequate evidence in Heinrich's flat to
suggest he's buried the book in Van Dultz's grave (mucky spade, soiled
wellies - haven't really decided exactly what yet). On to the graveyard.
The remaining Bauer will dig up Van Dultz's grave and the Bischoffe will
take possession of De Vermiis Mysteriis. Unbeknownst to them, however,
there is a nest of 'domesticated' star-vampires in the grave. As soon as
the Bischoffe takes possession of the book, they will start to attack
the Bauer. The Bischoffe will be able to defend himself, of course, but
the agents might want to use the opportunity to launch their own attack
at this point. They may even manage to kill the Bischoffe (there's no
way he'll surrender). If this happens - Kahn will take possession of the
book, as an officer of the BKA. Whilst the clear up is going on, he'll
seize the opportunity to make himself a very rich man, and take it with
him to Klieber's residence in order to thrash out a deal with the
Karotechia.
Special note: the chicken switch.
If the agents get into serious trouble fighting hordes of Bauer, a
generous GM might allow the Apache, Oliver Hassan's gang, to turn up
looking for revenge, and give the agents a hand.
