Dr. Joy Camp

Dr. Camp barely remembers her father, but she remembers everything her mother told her about the mysterious, engaging, sometimes cold-hearted man. Sometimes she can barely remember his face, but it comes and goes. She still has some of the notes and scrolls he left behind the night he disappeared ahead of the advancing Japanese forces. Her mother saved them for her, and never speaks of what she endured during the Japanese occupation of China. In later years, Joy found escape from her loneliness in examining these papers, and trying to unlock their meaning led her to specialize in translation. She discovered a talent for languages and eventually earned degrees in the field of ancient Chinese scripts, becoming one of the top experts in the field.

When the British men came to her and asked her to translate the scrolls, she dismissed her apprehensions as the nervousness she often feels around older westerners, the resentment she has always felt towards men who resemble her father in age and race. But she quickly recognized the Scrolls of Hsan, for her father had been feverishly translating these very scrolls when he had fled, leaving behind his notes behind. As she progressed on the laborious translation, she became more and more suspicious of the British men's motives, and once, as she was snooping around an office in their club, she overheard them discussing, in German, how they would dispose of her after she was finished. As soon as she could, she took her notes and facsimiles and escaped to the American Embassy, where her family documents won her the right to stay. Now she waits.
