Hey.

This is just a meager contribution to Emerald Hammer, namely a sidebar on Regnum Congo. Please brutally savage it until it's ready to include.

REGNUM CONGO

Written by Pigafetta, an Italian explorer, this book discusses the Congo region of Africa circa the end of the 16th century. Pigafetta discribes many strange things, including descriptions of what may be dinosaurs, as well as focusing some attention on the Anzique tribe. Two versions of this text exist. The first is the standard version, which can be found in libraries and collections throughout the world. This edition has Latin and English translations. The second version of Regnum Congo, is an expanded version of Pigafetta's work, although the authorship of these expansions is unknown. The edition is known to exist in Latin and German, and possibly English as well. The expanded edition further details the cannibalistic Anziques and their dark rituals.

What!!!

Christopher D. Nichols blundered badly (probably because of malicous informants) when he wrote

> Written by Pigafetta, a Dutch explorer,

Oh, my God!
Untill further notice, Antonio Pigafetta was an Italian, from Vicenza to be precise, thank you very much.

Born at the end of 15th century (1480 or 1491 depending on the souces) and died most likely in 1534. Travelled with Magellano (or Magellan, another Italian) and worked for the Spanish and the Gonzaga family (still other Italians).
Wrote, apart from the infamous "Regnum Congo" (of which a few copies survive, their thereabouts known only to Lovecraftian scholars), a "Relazione del primo viaggio intorno al mondo" (Relation on the first travel around the world, compiled 1525, published 19th century) - still available in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan - and a possibly apocriphal "Regola sull'arte della navigazione" (Rule on the art of navigation, discovered 1894).

The "Relation" details the Magellan circumnavigation expedition, and includes a collection of terms and expressions of the various indigenous peoples the expedition met.

Just to be on the safe side, another relation, Filippo Pigafetta, was also a traveller, specializing in Northern Africa and the Near and Middle East. He worked for Pope Sisto V [St. Jerome, anybody?]

And this is it.

Please remember that wherever you are, an Italian has already been there (probably on somebody else's payroll).

Cheers!

A few notes:

> Written by Pigafetta, a Dutch explorer, this book discusses the Congo
> region of Africa circa the end of the 16th century.

I'm not sure if Pigafetta was an explorer or not; the actual account which serves as the basis for this was written by the sailor Duarte Lopez. It might help to see if you can find an English translation (Report of the Kingdom of Congo) at the library and read the introduction - I'd have to reacquaint myself with it to be more specific. It'll help make that bibliography more impressive, too.

> Regnum Congo (expanded version only)
> Language: German, Latin, English;

From what I can tell, it was also published in French and Italian. Whether those are also expanded editions is up to you.
