There are plenty of white right-wingers available from Southern Africa, without needing to mar the racial purity of Karotechia. As an interesting historical note, the defense minister of South Africa in 1939, when the world went boom, was one Oswald Pirow, the leader of the fascist Nuwe Orde (New Order) party. Jan Smuts had to dissolve the government and create a more British one to get South Africa into the war on the right side, and even then, when the (Afrikaans) National Party took over in 1948, Oswald became less vilified. One of the SA Navy ships (scrapped in mid-1980s) was the Oswald Pirow, and there is a street named after him in Cape Town. There was a small rebel movement to join the Axis powers during the war, called the Ossewa Brandwag (Ox Wagon Fire Watch. It's a tradition thing).

It's quite logical to say that Karotechia fugitives could have come here, to fascist sympathisers. They might even have had a (magical) hand in the National Party winning that turning point election in 1948, to institute a more labour-oriented policy of racial discrimination. After all, large parts of apartheid legislation were designed to ensure that the black population remained as useful unskilled labour without polluting the cities (the Group Areas Act, initially, meant that blacks had to have a pass to be in any major city).

The Broederbond is a shadowy group of blue-blood Afrikaaners that literally controlled South African politics and big business in the periods 1900-1934 and 1948-1994. There are still claims of it's influence, but it (apparently) has lost most of it's power due to the new government.

There was a large amount of right-wing activity growing out of the 1990 referendum to end apartheid, which has petered out since about 1996. There were numerous rallies, parades and "training" camps around the 1994 elections. There were even right-wing terrorist attacks, including an incident at the handover talks between the government and black groups where the AWB (Afrikaner Weerstand Beweging/Afrikaans Resistance Movement) nicked a police APC and crashed it into the World Trade Centre. The Wit Wolve (White Wolves) created a little fuss, but never amounted to much.

Your best candidate for this Bischofe would be a member of the Inkatha Freedom Party, which is a conservative group from Natal. The IFP has been accused repeatedly of acting as a surrogate/Askari group to provide some legitimacy for the apartheid government; composed mainly of Zulus, it is involved in an ongoing war with the leftist, mainly Xhosa ANC (of which Nelson Mandela is the leader). The IFP holds only about 10% of the vote in this country, and is expected to lose some of that in the 1999 elections.

The Natal midlands has been the scene of ongoing civil disturbance since the start of armed action in the mid-70s; this has often been factional violence between ANC and IFP rather than black resistance to white rule. The IFP allegedly had/has hit squads trained in the Caprivi Strip during South African rule of Namibia, and was responsible for several massacres of ANC supporters. A rogue IFP protest march went too close to the ANC headquarters in 1993 and came under fire from ANC snipers firing from the roof of the building. Even today, violence is common in rural areas throughout South Africa (two points:
1. statistically, being a white South African farmer today is more dangerous than being a white Rhodesian farmer during that war
2. those responsible seem to be APLA (Azanian Ppl's Lib Army) troops, and they're killing the support base of the AWB, so are irrelevant to our discussion).

The AWB actually went to war in 1994, when Bophutatswana, a black "homeland" state (like an American Indian reservation, but nominally independent) was on the brink of revolution. The corrupt despot ruler, Lucas Mangope, requested AWB assistance to remain in power (anyone see the potential here?) and the AWB charged in. The result was a complete disaster, including some very ugly footage of wounded AWB members being executed by a local policeman.

Oh yes, this was all over the news here (except the footage you mention)

The funny thing is that the flag I was looking at was somehow different from the one on the webpage, the arms were pointing the other way and the style was different. Did they change the style? The flag I mentioned was wrong then. So it doesn't look like the sign of Eibon then - oh, well...

Well, thanks for the very detailed information, it's always good to hear what's going on 90 degrees to the south.
I'm looking forward to a very well done South African Chapter...(Oh, and by the way - is it still there at the new EH website? I couldn't find it!)
